History of Teide Cable Car

The Teide cable car celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2011. Inspired by Andrés de Arroyo y González de Chávez’s 1929 travels in Germany and Switzerland, the idea to improve access to Teide’s summit took shape. The route was carefully designed to use the sloping terrain, making tower installation easier and allowing the final station to be reached without additional towers.

The initial project, prepared by engineer José Ochoa Bejumea in 1930, set the stage for construction to begin on September 4, 1963. The project faced challenges, including harsh winter conditions and limited access. It took 8 years to complete, finishing on July 27, 1971. The cable car opened to the public on August 2, 1971.

Renovations between 1999 and 2007 modernized the cable car, replacing cabins, cables, and towers, and improving the stations. These updates greatly enhanced safety and comfort, ensuring a better experience for visitors during Teide cable car ride.
